The Roads and Traffic Authority has refused to release almost every document dealing with the planned extension of the controversial M4 East motorway despite a resolution of the NSW upper house ordering the production of all material.
On Wednesday night the RTA produced half a box of papers, most of which were already public, but did not explain what happened to six more boxes compiled by its major infrastructure branch.
A spokesman insisted it had provided ‘’all relevant documents to the Legislative Council in compliance with the call for papers'’.
Asked why it had not produced six other boxes of material referred to in RTA correspondence, the spokesman said they were all protected by cabinet secrecy provisions.
The Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said it was absurd to say all RTA documents were cabinet documents, especially as some have already been leaked and published in the media.
She accused the Government of hiding details of the planned route for the motorway and location of access ramps because it fears disclosure will provoke a voter backlash in the Labor seats of Marrickville and Balmain.
‘’They are abusing the cabinet exemptions to sidestep a clear upper house directive,'’ Ms Rhiannon said.

The Ashfield Greens are beginning to roll out a no junk mail campaign, letterboxing many residents of Ashfield, Summer Hill and Haberfield a No Junk Mail sticker for application to letterboxes.
We are hoping that residents take up this small gift from the Greens and play their part in helping to reduce excessive amounts of litter in our local streets and the amount of rubbish going into landfill (most junk mail goes straight into the rubbish).
We recognise, also, there is a difference between non addressed commercial mail/leaflets/brochures and community service notices (e.g., local council newsletter). Our junk mail sticker clearly identifies this difference by stating NO COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING MATERIAL, Community Notices Excepted.
The Distribution Standards Board can be contacted on 1800 676 136 to report distributors who deliver commercial material irresponsibly.
There is another form of junk mail, the ADDRESSED junk mail. The Australian Direct Marketing Association provides an ‘opt out’ service at which you can register. Go to : http://www.adma.com.au/asp/index.asp?qgid=1999
Businesses that are covered by the Federal Privacy Act must stop sending you unsolicited mail if you ask them to, unless they originally collected your information for the purpose of sending you direct marketing material. Further information can be obtained from the website of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner : http://www.privacy.gov.au/faqs/ypr/q7.html.

If you did not receive a sticker and would like one please do not hesitate to email your details to treasurer@ashfield.nsw.greens.org.au and we would be happy to drop one into your letterbox.

Ms SYLVIA HALE [7.20 p.m.]: I speak on the continuing abuses inflicted by part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, and in particular about an application by Demian Developments for a site at Old Canterbury Road and Longport Street, Lewisham which has been called in by the Minister for Planning. This application is yet another disturbing example of how business seems to be done in New South Wales. Showing its familiarity with the process, Demian Developments has donated more than $20,000 to the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party since 2002. But it has not stopped there. Accessing the Labor old mates network, Demian has engaged the former Minister for many things, Carl Scully, to argue its case to his former colleagues.
What are the justifications for the Minister calling in this development? What is so significant about the proposal that it requires the intervention of the State Government? Actually, there is nothing that sets this development apart from many other development applications other than it overrides the draft subregional strategy process that Marrickville Council is currently undertaking at the behest of the New South Wales Department of Planning, and it will be a huge overdevelopment. Demian proposes a massive five-tower development, including two towers of 14 storeys and one of 12 storeys, 524 residential units and retail floor space of 9,000 square metres, incorporating a major supermarket, a liquor store and 15 speciality stores. In bypassing the council, the developer is seeking the Minister’s connivance in overturning the Government’s own planning processes and the views and wellbeing of the local community.

Would you like to live next door to fourteen storey tower blocks? A huge overdevelopment has been proposed for Lewisham, at the corner of Old Canterbury Rd and Longport St. See map.
The development includes 14, 12 and 6 storey towers and a large supermarket mall with basement car parking. The developer has bypassed council and the local community and gone straight to the state government for approval under the controversial Part 3A law.
- Overdevelopment
- Traffic congestion and pollution
- Community disruption
- New precedents for building size for the Inner West
- Local shopping strips hurt - Petersham, Dulwich Hill, Summer Hill
- Interferes with the Cooks River to Iron Cove Greenway project
The Greens are campaigning to stop such a massive overdevelopment. You can view our webpage on this issue: http://marrickvillegreens.wordpress.com/issue/lewisham-part-3a-development/
A public meeting has been called for 7pm, Wednesday 20 May at Summer Hill Community Centre, 131 Smith Street, Summer Hill. See map to venue. Come along to see the developers plans, express your opinion, and show your opposition to this overdevelopment.

While it has been fun to casually mention you are going to SHAG tonight, and you get to do so once a month, the time has come to forgo inane humour in the interests of professionalism. After several months of contemplation the decision was made to change the name of ‘Summer Hill - Ashfield Greens’ to just ‘Ashfield Greens’. After much consideration it has been decided the new name better reflects the geographic focus of the group - namely Ashfield Municipal Council, and the Federal and State electorates that intersect the municipality.

A ream of non recycled paper has a carbon footprint of 2.5kgs of C O2 equivalent. Recycled paper is significantly less, but still has a cost to the environment in printing, shipping & storage requirements.
Electronic business papers have no such cost, except for the power required for using the computer, which can be offset or purchased from green power sources, all councillors are provided with a laptop and scanner/printer/fax to facilitate communication with our community, this hardware alone is enough to start saving paper and energy. Every councillor who chooses to use E-papers instead of printed business papers is saving 90kgs of CO2e every year. As well as saving several litres of oil used to produce ink cartridges, and power the delivery trucks that bring the paper to Council.

(As edited from the AGM Convenor’s Report by Indi Bell)
It is a new year for the Summer Hill – Ashfield Greens, and a lot of work by a number of people had gone into Summer Hill - Ashfield Greens events last year. Election campaigns were the major focus of attention and energy, with virtually no time for a breather between the State election in November 2007 and starting to plan and campaign for the recent local council elections.
The fantastic result is an endorsement of our work and our policies. Marc, Lyall and Patrick were elected with good margins and Selene, despite a very late start, only narrowly missed out on picking up a North Ward seat. Margaret was instrumental in the formation of the Burwood-Strathfield Greens, who are about to be affiliated with the NSW Greens. It was great to see Christine Donayre elected onto Burwood Council as a Greens’ councillor, a result that led directly to Lesley Furneaux-Cook from Burwood Community Voice being elected as Mayor.
