Notice of Motion to Ashfield Council.
Preamble:
At an Ordinary Council meeting held on the 23rd of July 2002, Council endorsed a declaration proclaiming Ashfield Council as a “Refugee Welcome Zone”.
At this same meeting Council also resolved to make and display a large banner in support of this new declaration. Council staff have since informed us that this banner has been vandalised and is now beyond repair.

The advent of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party in the late 1990’s, has initiated a downward ethical spiral in Australian politics. Standards were lowered with vulnerable minority groups seen as easy prey for the political advancement of some major political parties.
An example of this was seen after the tragic events of 11th Sept 2001 in New York. Some major Australian political parties/governments did not redress, and in many cases exacerbated, negative images of some Australian ethnic communities.

Statement for Peace - End the Occupation of Iraq: Bring the Troops Home
Australia, as part of the United States’ Coalition of the Willing, has participated in a war of aggression against the Iraqi people. John Howard took the Australian people to war based on the false claims that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and that attacking Iraq would help rid the world of terrorism.

Preamble:
The use of a chauffeur-driven car specifically for the Mayor is regarded by many as a non-essential luxury. At present a full-time Ashfield Council employee (Council Health Inspector) is allocated additional after-hours duties as a chauffeur to the Mayor.
It is also noteworthy in the financial year 2002-2003, the depreciation on this Mayor’s vehicle amounted to $4093. In the following year (2003-2004) this figure increased to $4963.
